Lately working on a 9 seater 30 m spanning design that has blended fuselage to the wing and still have tailfeathers....64 m2 solar panels 360 kg empty and 180 kg batteries to get swift ascend to 12 km ( even higher with less passengers ).
Aim would be to fly to 22-24 km to see if the thin air with an efficient machine would yield 600-1000 km/h speeds ( like the paratroopers go beyond the speed of sound at high alt ).

from there, you could release the wing section (and have it land on it's own) and pop a small rocket right? (to orbit?)

Sigma hi !

It was my previous theory yes. But I am a bit concerned about the overall weight and capability of the solar cells and batteries to carry extra at that speed.

There is a company that is going to make the solar cells produce @ 50% efficiency...isn't that something. It has got something to do with handling the surface of the cell with nano....something.

That is a game changer. :D

This is 28 m spanning and has 72 x more power from 20% efficient panels than a pedalled machine like the MIT Daedalus. Imagine what it could achieve with just a tad of battery power.
Latest version has 28 span...0,75 m thick fuselage/wing at thickest point and 75 m2 solar panel area.

Here is the latest version.

It would be intresting to see with suitable props ( up to 80 km ) and sufficient thrusters and amount of propellant that how high this could go ?
