I was wondering how big a help would that be ..a solar powered plane that first goes up to FL750 and then using a thruster to FL2620 ( 80 km )...wouldn't it be easier to launch ( manned ) space ships for deep space exploration like this ?
BTW I am new here..I am a aviation fanatic..but space interest remains. _________________ http://mesoslaunch.blogspot.fi/ http://max3fan.blogspot.com/ |

I also counted 24 000 km/h speed at 100 km altitude for this solar/rocket hybrid mother ship for launching the parasite.

FEEL free to comment...I counted 70 km/s speed if constructed on a orbit a new kinda rocket for Phobos. Elements would be brought on Solar Eagle and constructed on LEO.

This has gone beyond 17 km with double the wing loading; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caproni_Ca.161

How do you expect to get back to Earth?

JamesG wrote: How do you expect to get back to Earth? Oh and Hi, welcome to the forum. In a ticker parade in Manhattan ! ![]() I have tought about the mission so that a unmanned ship was sent in slow mode beforehand to MARS orbit and it gets thus a new fuel load to come to Earth..the return to earth takes place with braking with the thrusters. The pod is only 800 kg..the lunar module is left to Phobos. I am trying to minimize all systems..like 1 seater LM..I have also tought about having just one man on the whole mission ??? I have so far concentrated 98% on the aeroplane capable to fly to 80 -100 km not so much on the space exploration. How is this for a landing system for one man !?

I figured if the sides have all 4 m2 solar panels and the tinman arms extented with 10 m2 of panels I am all set with energy for life support systems ?

I am all about minimization and innovation, but I think you greatly underestimate the physical requirements of what your are proposing. The scale you have depicted (annoyingly) here might be adequate for a (small) unmanned vehicle, but there is no way you are going to get a person or two even to LEO much less to the Moon or Mars in that small a package without a lot of unobtainum.
Beyond that, your "ergonomics" are also wildly optimistic/sadistic. Have someone seal you in a 2 cubic meter box and see how long you can stand it. While you might might be able to take the week of a trip to the Moon and back, there is no way you'd get to Mars with any kind of sanity left. |

I see you have to have a comfort wagon...ticker parade in Manhattan is not enough ? That is very american James !
![]() The volume of the command module and LM is 10,7 m3...there is plenty of room and windows too to watch the stars. Only the very last few seconds before touch down to Earth are spend in 3 m3 room with 4 windows looking at the sweet clouds and oceans of the mother Earth. If you understand the safety feature behind it,,you might even enjoy it more. Maybe the future astronauts are then picked from mining towns if the small life support space is so appalling ? This mother ship cannot make much bigger one..or maybe just a little, but not a magnitude bigger. _________________ http://mesoslaunch.blogspot.fi/ http://max3fan.blogspot.com/ |

Less "sadistic" command module and lunar module !
![]() About 9 m3 interior alltogether. Externally 15.4 m3 volume on command and lunar module together. I actually had no idea there is an ongoing trip to MARS planned already; http://www.mars-one.com/mission/the-technology
