SACRAMENTO – The California Legislature and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger honored the team of SpaceShipOne today in a ceremony at the State Capitol. Paul Allen, Burt Rutan, Sir Richard Branson and pilots Mike Melvill and Brian Binnie were celebrated for successfully launching the first privately built, manned reusable launch vehicle (RLV).

“California has a long history of conquering new competitive frontiers,” stated The Honorable Andrea Seastrand, Executive Director of the California Space Authority (CSA), and a participant in the ceremony. “With experience honed in the early years of aviation, California ingenuity and intellectual capital was again on display with the success of SpaceShipOne’s flights. As the commercial space services sector continues to succeed and grow, California has an opportunity to capitalize on consumer demand for these emerging opportunities. The State’s acknowledgement of SpaceShipOne’s avant-garde innovators is a welcoming sign to others who would dare to expand the market for space transportation.”

Designed and built by Mojave Aerospace Ventures Team, SpaceShipOne was successfully launched into space, approximately 69.6 miles above the earth’s surface, and safely returned to its launch site in California’s Mojave Desert twice within one week.

“Our goal at CSA is to make California the premier location for space enterprise to flourish. In this effort we worked with the Then-California Technology, Trade and Commerce Agency (CTTCA) in 1999 and 2000 to ensure that Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification could be obtained for in-land launches of RLVs. As a direct result of the CTTCA Space Grant Program, California RLV developers were able to have their voices heard and directly affect the outcome of the regulatory framework that is now enabling RLVs, such as SpaceShipOne, to emerge and succeed,” Mrs. Seastrand stated.
