The International Space Station’s Expedition 18 crew members sent down good wishes for the New Year in nine different languages on Monday, a day filled with science and maintenance work.

Flight Engineer Sandra Magnus collected samples from the station’s new Water Recovery System and analyzed water samples using the Total Organic Carbon Analyzer, or TOCA. She also installed a grounding strap on TOCA.

Commander Mike Fincke removed and stowed the Resistive Exercise Device, which the crew members have used during their daily exercise routines aboard the orbiting complex. With the help of Magnus, Fincke then worked on the installation of the new Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED). The crew of space shuttle Endeavour delivered the ARED to the station during the STS-126 mission in November.

Flight Engineer Yury Lonchakov worked with the Plants-1 experiment, which researches the growth and development of plants in the microgravity environment of space. He also familiarized himself with the OBSTANOVKA experiment hardware. Fincke and Lonchakov installed a probe on the hull of the Pirs docking compartment as part of this experiment during their spacewalk last week. The probe is slated to take its first measurements of the plasma electric potential around the station Tuesday.
