kansas.com: Doug Shane – mission control director when SpaceShipOne won the $10 million Ansari X prize – will speak in Wichita at a banquet during Engineers’ Week in February.

Shane is a test pilot and director of flight operations for Scaled Composites, Inc.’ s flights to outer space.
The plane’s development was led by Scaled Composites, Inc. founder Burt Rutan.
Shane is national president of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.
“We’re really proud to get him as a speaker,” said Richard Bowman, president of the Wichita Council of Engineering Societies.

The speech is open to the public, Bowman said. The cost is $30. It will be held Feb. 24 at the Beech Activity Center. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m.; dinner is at 6:30 with the program starting at 7:30.
