Secrecy shrouds space launch

A Toronto man with dreams of reaching space — and potentially earning a windfall if he makes it — will be in California for a major announcement on Tuesday.

Precisely what that announcement will be is a closely guarded secret. But there’s speculation that Brian Feeney and American aviation legend Burt Rutan, who designed SpaceShipOne, will announce when their two teams will compete for the Ansari X Prize.

The $10 million (U.S.) is being offered to the first team that builds a reusable spacecraft and reaches a height of 100 kilometres twice within two weeks. The vehicle must be privately funded and carry at least one person plus the equivalent weight of two others.

But Feeney won’t offer a clue as to what he’ll be saying at the Santa Monica airport next week.

“I’ve been the most tight-lipped person to the point that I’m even surprising myself,” he said yesterday.
