Robotics Work Outside Station as Crew Focuses on Science

The six-member Expedition 35 crew is preparing for a May 14 undocking while pressing ahead with science inside and outside the International Space Station. The crew is also working to maintain the systems that keep the space station in orbit and in service.

Commander Chris Hadfield and Flight Engineer Tom Marshburn worked together for the Integrated Cardiovascular experiment. Hadfield photographed Marshburn as prepared and put on sensors that monitored his cardiovascular system.

Hadfield later spent his afternoon continuing more work with a new payload Ethernet hub that updates the orbital laboratory’s local area network. He worked in the Destiny laboratory powering down a science freezer rack, then uninstalling it to access the new Ethernet hub.

Marshburn worked with another science freezer rack replacing a failed temperature recorder. He later loaded new software on an EXPRESS rack laptop computer and recharged its batteries.

Flight Engineer Chris Cassidy worked on science hardware throughout the day. He stowed gear used during experiment operations inside the Fluids Integrated Rack. Cassidy then spent most of the afternoon working with the Light Microscopy Module Microscope. He inspected and cleaned the hardware on the device that was used for a run of the Advanced Colloids Experiment.

The three cosmonauts, Flight Engineers Roman Romanenko, Pavel Vinogradov and Alexander Misurkin, started their morning with onboard training and a medical drill. The trio practiced communication and coordination in the event of a medical emergency as well as checked the locations of medical gear.

Vinogradov and Misurkin then worked on auditing the Treadmill Vibration Isolation System and its elements such as nuts, bolts, belts and fasteners. Vinogradov worked on more ISS Progress 51 cargo transfers while Romanenko and Misurkin worked on crew handover tasks.

On the ground, controllers continue operations with the Canadarm2 and Dextre, the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator, for a Robotic Refueling Mission (RRM) demonstration on the International Space Station. The RRM uses fine-tuned robotics to test the concept that satellites never meant to be serviced can be fueled and fixed in space.

Marshburn, Hadfield and Roman Romanenko continue to pack personal items for their return home May 14 inside the Soyuz TMA-07M spacecraft. Their undocking signifies the official start of Expedition 36 with Vinogradov, Misurkin and Cassidy continuing their stay.

In Star City, Russia, three new station crew members are getting ready for their May 28 mission to replace the out-going Expedition 35 trio. Flight Engineers Fyodor Yurchikhin, Karen Nyberg and Luca Parmitano will launch aboard the Soyuz TMA-09M spacecraft and dock about six hours later to the Rassvet module.
