Los Angeles, CA. (July 15, 2004) – What if savvy, prophetic consumers could have bought a front-row seat for one of the Wright Brothers’ earliest airplane demonstrations, or a piece of the Apollo 11 spaceship that landed on the moon? Unfortunately, many historical events are only recognized in hindsight.
On June 21th, Mike Melvill rocketed to fame in the specially designed SpaceShipOne as the first commercial pilot to enter the boundaries of outer space from the Mojave Desert. A new commercial space race has begun and the X PRIZE Foundation is the catalyst motivating space tourism entrepreneurs worldwide through the ANSARI X PRIZE, a $10 million award for the first pioneers to send three people into space twice within a two-week period.
As more than 26 teams vie for the ANSARI X PRIZE, the X PRIZE Foundation has found a unique funding mechanism to tap into the enthusiasm of a growing public eager to take part in future commercial space flights as benefactors, passengers or both. Through a special eBay auction, targeted at outer space and aeronautic enthusiasts, online consumers can purchase limited edition artwork or actually experience the burgeoning era of commercial space travel for themselves.

Education is a major goal of the X PRIZE Foundation and we’re consistently exploring ways to engage the public in our efforts, stresses Gregg Maryniak, Executive Director, X PRIZE Foundation. Not only will the eBay auction raise needed funds for our innovative educational programs, but it will generate curiosity and excitement among a public enthusiastic for a new phase of space travel.

The auction has just kicked off and items can be viewed on eBay by typing in X PRIZE. The eBay X PRIZE auction offers both physical and experiential items including:

- Limited edition, bronze sculptures created by Erik Lindbergh, grandson of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh. A professional artist, Lindberg has created rocket-shaped sculptures that are accompanied by a special certificate of authenticity. eBay visitors can type in Lindbergh or X PRIZE to examine these pieces with starting prices of $6,500.

- Autographed X PRIZE posters signed by key members of the space flight competition teams. Signers include Scaled Composites’ Burt Rutan, the creator of SpaceShipOne and a front-runner in the ANSARI X PRIZE race, and da Vinci’s Brian Feeney whose team has developed an innovative spacecraft to be launched from a balloon. One of the posters sold quickly online for $950.

- Membership in the New Spirit of St. Louis Organization. Only 10 memberships remain from 100 slots in this exclusive organization, which offers members such perks as VIP attendance at space launches in the U.S. and Canada. Memberships start at $25,000.

- A flight to the edge of space in Russia, in a (former) Soviet MIG fighter jet.
