Proton Successfully Orbited Loutch 5B and Yamal 300K Satellites

A Proton M integrated launch vehicle (ILV) lifted off from the Baikonur launch base with the Loutch 5B and Yamal 300K satellites on board at 01:04 a.m. Moscow Time today, on  November 3.  This was the 9th Proton mission of 2012 year.

The launch proceeded nominally.  In compliance with the mission design, the orbital unit separated from LV Stage 3 to continue flight in a self-powered mode. The subsequent injection of the two spacecraft to their target orbits was achieved through four burns of the Breeze M main engine. Spacecraft separation from the upper stage occurred on schedule.

The heavy-lift Proton launch vehicle is developed and produced by the state-run Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center.

Loutch 5B is the second satellite to make up the Loutch multi-purpose space-borne relay system and like its predecessor, Loutch 5A, is designed and built around the Expess 1000 mid-lift space bus  by Reshetnev ISS.

All Loutch-family satellites are or will be designed to support data exchange between low-Earth orbit (LEO) space vehicles (primarily the Russian Segment of the International Space Station) and the Earth.  The first member of this satellite family, Loutch 5A, was successfully launched by a Proton M/Breeze M ILV from the Area 81 Launch Complex, Baikonur on 11 December 2011.

The Yamal 300K communication and TV/audio casting satellite is built around the Express 1000N up-to-date space bus by Reshetnev ISS for Gazprom Space Systems, a communication satellite operator.  From its station point at 90° E, this satellite is to provide C- / Ku-band services across Russia and the CIS.
