Spacewalk Preps and Robotics for Station Crew

The Expedition 32 crew members living and working aboard the International Space Station Thursday continued preparations for an upcoming spacewalk and worked with the orbiting laboratory’s non-human resident.

Flight Engineer Suni Williams performed maintenance on U.S spacesuit batteries and prepared equipment that will be used on her upcoming spacewalk set for Aug. 30.

During the 6.5-hour excursion, Williams and Flight Engineer Aki Hoshide are slated to replace a faulty power relay unit on the station’s truss, route power cables for the Russian multipurpose module replacing Pirs and replace a failing camera on the Canadarm2 robotic arm.

In other spacewalk preparations, Williams and Hoshide, with some assistance from Flight Engineer Joe Acaba, performed a spacesuit “fit check” to ensure the spacesuits fit properly.

Acaba also set up Robonaut 2 in the Destiny laboratory for power and command tests being conducted by ground controllers. Robonaut is the first humanoid robot in space, and although its primary job for now is teaching engineers how dexterous robots behave in space, the hope is that through upgrades and advancements, it could one day venture outside the station to help spacewalkers make repairs or additions to the station or perform scientific work.

Later, Hoshide had some time scheduled to speak with TV Asahi’s “Hodo Station,” in Tokyo during a live in-flight event for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

Commander Gennady Padalka and Flight Engineer Yuri Malenchenko continued to reconfigure and stow equipment after their 5-hour, 51-minute spacewalk on Monday.

Flight Engineer Sergei Revin worked throughout the day in the station’s Russian segment performing a variety of maintenance tasks and monitoring its systems.

Revin also worked with the Identification experiment, which examines the station’s dynamic loads during events such as dockings and reboosts.
