Station’s Altitude Raised; Science and Maintenance for Crew

The docked “Edoardo Amaldi” Automated Transfer Vehicle-3 (ATV-3) fired its engines at 3:06 p.m. EDT Thursday for 15 minutes, 4 seconds, increasing the International Space Station’s orbit.

The orbital reboost puts the station in the proper phasing for the arrival of the ISS Progress 47 cargo craft on April 22, the departure of Expedition 30 Commander Dan Burbank and Flight Engineers Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin on April 27 and the arrival of Expedition 31 crew members Gennady Padalka, Joe Acaba and Sergei Revin on May 15.

Meanwhile, the Expedition 30 crew members living and working aboard the station Thursday worked with a variety of scientific research from around the world and continued the ongoing maintenance of the systems aboard the orbiting laboratory.

Burbank focused on a variety housekeeping activities and performed maintenance on the station’s Water Recovery System, which supplies the crew with clean, recycled water.

Flight Engineer Don Pettit set up hardware for an experiment known as Burning and Suppression of Solids, or BASS, which investigates the burning and extinction characteristics of a wide variety of fuel samples in microgravity.

Flight Engineer Andre Kuipers participated in an in-flight media event for the European Space Agency, speaking with guests and officials at the Artis Planetarium in Amsterdam.

Ivanishin and Flight Engineer Oleg Kononenko focused on cargo transfers in the docked ISS Progress 46 cargo craft. Ivanishin also participated in a Russian medical test called SPRUT-2, which investigates the distribution and behavior of human body fluids in zero gravity.

Shkaplerov worked in the Russian segment of the station, monitoring its systems and performing a variety of routine maintenance activities. He also set up hardware for the Coulomb Crystal experiment, which gathers data about charged particles in a weightless environment.
