Thursday Reboost Sets Station in Proper Phasing for Visitors

The docked “Edoardo Amaldi” Automated Transfer Vehicle-3 (ATV-3) will fire its engines for the second time Thursday afternoon increasing the station’s orbit. The orbital reboost puts the station in the proper phasing for the docking of a new cargo ship, the departure of Commander Dan Burbank and Flight Engineers Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin and the arrival of Expedition 31 crew members Gennady Padalka, Joe Acaba and Sergei Revin.

After flight controllers restored power to the ATV-3 resupply vehicle on Saturday, Burbank and Flight Engineer Andre Kuipers spent Wednesday replacing a faulty GPS receiver unit in the Destiny laboratory. The new unit enables communications redundancy ensuring the SpaceX/Dragon capsule receives navigation data when it arrives at the space station next month.

Flight Engineer Don Pettit spent his day conducting ongoing international science research. He started his morning participating in the VO2Max experiment which measures a crew member’s ability to perform strenuous tasks such as a spacewalk or critical emergency procedures. Pettit also studied plant growth and development in microgravity using the facilities inside Japan’s Kibo laboratory.

Shkaplerov and Ivanishin worked in the station’s Russian segment replacing parts on the Environmental Control and Life Support System. Shkaplerov also videotaped a Russian physics experiment that observes the formation and interaction of electrically charged particles, also called Coulomb crystals. Ivanishin participated in a study that observes how cultural differences affect crew performance and perception during long-duration missions.

Flight Engineer Oleg Kononenko studied the adaptation of a crew member’s cardiovascular system for the Pneumocard experiment. A crew member wears sensors that measure breathing, blood pressure and heart rate, and the data is compared to pre-mission and post-mission results. Kononenko also spent most of his afternoon transferring fluids to the Progress 46 resupply craft.
