World's Second-Largest Aircraft Delivers Test Hardware to NASA

Cleveland–Space hardware to be tested at NASA Glenn Research Center’s Plum Brook Station in Sandusky, Ohio, will be offloaded from an Antonov An-124 aircraft at Cleveland Hopkins Airport Thursday morning, August 9. The Ariane 5 payload fairing, manufactured by Oerlikon Space in Switzerland, will be transported to Plum Brook by truck in the afternoon.

Jerry Carek, facility manager for the Space Power Facility, and John Butcher, test program manager for Oerlikon Space of Switzerland, which manufactured the payload fairing, will be available to answer questions from the media.

The fairing protects a mission’s payload from thermal, aerodynamic and acoustic effects experienced during launch and on the flight through the atmosphere until it is jettisoned into space. It will be tested in a simulated space environment at Plum Brook in the Space Power Facility, the world’s largest vacuum chamber. This essential piece of risk reduction is done to assure that the fairing will separate properly without causing damage to the launch vehicle.

Media representatives interested in viewing the aircraft and offloading of hardware need to respond to Sally Harrington at
216-433-2037 by 8:30 a.m. on August 9 and must be at the Airport Fire Station off Postal Road at 9:30 a.m. to be escorted.
