Expedition 28 Flight Engineers Mike Fossum, Sergei Volkov and Satoshi Furukawa are set to dock to the International Space Station’s Rassvet module at 5:22 p.m. EDT Thursday aboard the Soyuz TMA-02M spacecraft, bringing the Expedition 28 crew to its full six-member complement.

The trio began the two-day journey to the orbiting laboratory after launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 4:12 p.m. Tuesday (2:12 a.m. Wednesday, Kazakhstan time).

Fossum, Volkov and Furukawa will join the current station residents, Expedition 28 Commander Andrey Borisenko and Flight Engineers Alexander Samokutyaev and Ron Garan, who have been living and working on the station since April 6.

Aboard the station Wednesday, Borisenko, Samokutyaev and Garan focused on conducting scientific research and performing maintenance tasks.

Borisenko spent time working with the Pneumocard experiment. This experiment is an integrated study of the cardiovascular systems of crew members in various phases of long duration spaceflight. He also participated in an experiment called Interaction, which examines the day-to-day communications and interactions between the crew and the ground teams.

Samokutyaev set up and used video and photography equipment in support of the URAGAN experiment. URAGAN is a long-term Russian experiment that documents the changes that occur on Earth after catastrophes such as hurricanes and man-made disasters.

Samokutyaev also worked with the Russian SONOCARD experiment, which is helping to develop ways to monitor the crew’s cardiovascular systems through contactless methods.

Garan spent time in the Quest airlock conducting routine maintenance on the U.S. spacesuits. He also continued to help recover some of the station’s onboard computers after this week’s equipment refresh.

Later, Garan worked on cargo transfers and prepared the station for the arrival of Fossum, Volkov and Furukawa by getting their equipment lockers set up.
