Reboost Puts Station on Track for Dockings

The three Expedition 24 crew members aboard the International Space Station tackled a variety of science and maintenance duties Tuesday following a Monday night reboost that put the orbiting complex on track for the arrival of three additional crew members and a fresh supply of cargo.

Commander Alexander Skvortsov and Flight Engineer Mikhail Kornienko began their workday outfitting the replacement cycle ergometer in the Russian segment of the station. This upgraded cycle is one of a number of exercise devices available to station crew members as part of their daily fitness routine to stave off the loss of bone density and muscle mass that accompanies long-duration spaceflight.

Afterwards, Kornienko set up a Russian science experiment that remotely measures methane and carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere, while Skvortsov conducted preventive maintenance on the Zvezda service module’s ventilation system. Skvortsov also removed some unneeded control equipment from the Rassvet Mini-Research Module installed by the STS-132 shuttle crew in May.

In the station’s Destiny lab, Flight Engineer Tracy Caldwell Dyson inspected emergency provisions, including a portable breathing apparatus and fire extinguisher.

After a break for lunch, Caldwell Dyson spent time working with some of the station’s science facilities. She configured hardware in BioLab, an on-orbit biology laboratory. Caldwell Dyson also worked with the Coarsening in Solid-Liquid Mixtures-2 experiment, which studies the rate at which particles of tin suspended in a liquid comprised of molten tin/lead alloy increase in size in a weightless environment through a process known as coarsening. This work has direct applications to metal alloy manufacturing on Earth, including materials critical for aerospace applications.

The engines of the docked ISS Progress 37 cargo craft were fired twice Monday night for a total of 17 minutes, completing a trio of reboosts that began Friday. These maneuvers optimize the station’s docking opportunities with the Soyuz TMA-19 spacecraft carrying three additional Expedition 24 flight engineers on June 17 and ISS Progress 38 several weeks later. The station is now orbiting at an altitude of 221.5 x 218 statute miles.

Back on Earth, the Soyuz TMA-19 crew, astronauts Doug Wheelock and Shannon Walker and cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, rehearsed rendezvous techniques Tuesday in preparation for launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on June 15.
