Resupply Craft Docks Saturday, Station Crew Works Science

The ISS Progress 37 cargo craft docks Saturday afternoon to the International Space Station’s Pirs Docking Compartment. The Progress 37 launched Wednesday afternoon from Kazakhstan and carries 2.6 tons of food, fuel, oxygen, propellant and supplies for the Expedition 23 crew.

A valve that had been stuck on a Nitrogen Tank Assembly (NTA) that was installed on the station’s truss structure during STS-131 is now operating. A method known as cold soaking, which was helped by the space station’s angle in orbit, restored its functionality. The NTA is part of the orbiting laboratory’s External Thermal Control System.

Russia’s Chief Flight Director, Vladimir Solovyev, called Commander Oleg Kotov and discussed life aboard the International Space Station. Solovyev also lived and worked in space aboard the much smaller Salyut 7 space station in 1984. Salyut 7 was the last Russian space station before Mir.

Flight Engineer Tracy Caldwell Dyson collected and stored biological samples in the Human Research Facility, a science rack dedicated to the study of human physiology in microgravity. She also swapped out a cartridge in the Materials Science Laboratory, another science rack, and performed an eye exam on Flight Engineer T.J. Creamer.

Kotov and Flight Engineer Alexander Skvortsov conducted a conference with Russian Mission Control specialists in preparation for Saturday’s docking. The cosmonauts trained with the TORU, the telerobotically operated rendezvous system, which can be used to manually dock a resupply craft if necessary.

On Thursday, Flight Engineer Soichi Noguchi along with Caldwell Dyson and Creamer participated in an experiment that studies fatigue during long duration missions. The experiment observes behavioral changes that may occur during extended work periods and changing sleep shifts.

On what was basically a crew off-duty day, Skvortsov and Flight Engineer Mikhail Kornienko exercised on the treadmill vibration isolation system in the Zvezda service module. Skvortsov set up a video camera to downlink live video of a crew member on the treadmill for analysis by experts on the ground. The rest of the crew also worked out on the treadmill and the advanced resistive exercise device.
