CLEVELAND, (NASA) — NASA’s Glenn Research Center has awarded a contract to Sunpower Incorporated of Athens, Ohio to design, fabricate and test a full scale power conversion unit to support the agency’s fission surface power technology development project.

Sunpower will develop a 12 kilowatt free-piston Stirling generator that will be used as part of a non-nuclear system technology demonstration unit test at Glenn. Systems integration and checkout testing at Glenn is estimated to begin in the fall of 2012.

Valued at over $6.4 million, the period of performance begins in April 2010 and extends for 45 months through the initial test program at Glenn. The cost reimbursement contract is a down select from Phase I contracts that were awarded to Sunpower Inc., Athens, Ohio and Barber Nichols Inc., Arvada, Colo. that concluded in June 2009.
