Commander Jeff Williams tagged up with Flight Engineers Soichi Noguchi and T.J. Creamer, who arrived at the station Dec. 22 with Flight Engineer Oleg Kotov, to help them transition smoothly to their new environment. Noguchi and Creamer also had an hour set aside for continuing orientation during their first two weeks aboard the station.

Later, Williams, a retired U.S. Army colonel, and Creamer, an Army colonel, saluted U.S. forces in Iraq with a special call to Baghdad. Service members had the chance to talk with the astronauts about life on the station, their military careers and what it is like to live in space for up to six months.

In the Russian segment of the station, Kotov and Flight Engineer Maxim Suraev kicked off the first of two days of repair work on Russian Orlan spacesuits in preparation for a spacewalk scheduled for mid-January. During that spacewalk, Suraev and Kotov will set up the Poisk module to begin serving as a docking port for Russian spacecraft.

Working in the Columbus laboratory, Creamer replaced a water reservoir in the European Modular Cultivation System, which is a facility where small organisms can grow in variable gravity conditions using a centrifuge.
