An Update from the Speed Up Team: Last Saturday we did a static test with another hybrid grain. This one was made from a 2″x12″ PVC pipe nipple with threaded end caps. The fuel was candle wax.

I’m happy to say the catalyst ignition system is completely confirmed. The video shows a white peroxide cloud for 3 frames (100 ms) then the exhaust changes to a luminous plume with at least one mach diamond so ignition definitely occurred.

The rocket ran very rough with a machine-gun-like sound. The next one will need a more restricting orifice among other changes. The end cap that made up the nozzle also blew off less than one second into the firing. So we have a lot to learn, but are making progress.  Watch The Video Here

Crew Chief Bio:
Robert Steinke received his B.S. in 1995 and M.S. in 1997 in Computer Science from U.C. Santa Barbara, and his Ph.D. in 2001 in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California from 2001 to 2006. While there, his work included writing real-time flight software for the Rock Abrasion Tool instrument on the Mars Exploration Rover mission. His technical interests center around breakthroughs that will have a drastic positive effect on the long term well being of humanity such as space settlement and fusion power. He currently lives with his wife Mollie in Laramie, Wyoming with their daughters Adelaide and Nora, and son Paul.
