When we hit the road, we have a destination in mind, a deadline to meet and, if need be, a road map to guide the way. However, for commuters along NASA Parkway, near the Johnson Space Center, one stop sign directed them immediately to the Moon, Mars and beyond.

SPACEHAB, Incorporated (NASDAQ/NMS: SPAB), a leading provider of commercial space services, is proud to announce it received the prestigious MarCom Creative Gold Award for a billboard the Company designed to congratulate NASA on its plans to return to the moon and venture off to further planets.

The green traffic light depicts the Earth and a “go” from here; yellow represents our nation’s pending return to the Moon; and the red highlights Mars as human’s next destination. “Receiving this award is a great honor when you note that the competition is dominated by renowned advertising agencies and design firms,” said Kimberly Campbell, Vice President Corporate Marketing and Communications. “As Oscar is to the movie industry, MarCom is to the communications field, and I am very proud of SPACEHAB’s award winning creative team.” There were more than four thousand entrants seeking the MarCom awards, which recognize outstanding achievement by marketing practitioners.

While acknowledged for its imaginative design, the NASA Parkway billboard symbolizes SPACEHAB’s history and future with NASA. In addition to providing commercial products and services to the space shuttle and space station programs, SPACEHAB was awarded, and recently completed, NASA’s Concept Exploration and Refinement contract to identify systems and architecture that support human lunar exploration. “On this project, we drew upon our expertise to design a safe and adaptive habitat that would allow extended human presence on the lunar surface,” stated Rick Fitts, Vice President SPACEHAB Government Services. “Our concepts utilized a modular design, derived from our habitat and cargo components currently used on shuttle missions, to allow the habitat to evolve and meet the demands of longer crew habitation. Our concepts could be equally well utilized to build a Martian base.”

“From conceptualizing habitats for the moon to developing critical hardware needed for when we get there, our Company is poised to be a part of the next era of exploration,” said Mike Kearney, SPACEHAB President and Chief Executive Officer. “That billboard is not just a creative sign; it’s a reminder of where we are headed as a nation.”
