CLEVELAND — STS-119 Mission Specialist Joseph M. Acaba will conduct an educational presentation to hundreds of students from Luis Munoz Marin Middle School and the Metropolitan Cleveland Consortium for STEM High School, or MC2STEM, on Thursday, Oct. 8.

Media are invited to cover both activities during the following scheduled times:

8:20 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., presentation to students at Luis Munoz in Cleveland
1:20 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., briefing to MC2STEM students at NASA Glenn Research Center

Acaba will be available for interviews immediately following both briefings.

Acaba, a former middle school math and science teacher, is also the first Peace Corps veteran to become an astronaut. He conducted two spacewalks during the STS-119 mission in March, his first journey into space.

STS-119 was the 28th shuttle mission to the International Space Station. Shuttle Discovery and its crew delivered the space station’s fourth and final set of solar array wings, completing the station’s truss, or backbone. The additional electricity provided by the arrays fully powers science experiments and helps support station operations. Discovery glided to a perfect touchdown at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 3:14 p.m. on March 28, successfully completing a 13-day journey of more than 5.3 million miles.

Media representatives interested in covering the afternoon event should contact Jeannette Owens at 216-433-2990 or the Media Relations Office at 216-433-2901, by 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to arrange security clearance onto the center.
