Press release: Rocketplane® team members traveled to Las Cruces, New Mexico from Oct. 5-9, 2005 for the Countdown to the X PRIZE CUP celebration. Braving wind, dust and thunderstorms, Rocketplane made an appearance at the 1st Annual X PRIZE CUP Exposition on Oct. 9, 2005.
Manufacturing Manager Barry Reynolds produced an outstanding model of the XP Spaceplane that was the centerpiece of the Expo. Oklahoma State Senator Gilmer Capps made the rounds in his Rocketplane baseball cap while six Rocketplane employees answered general questions about the company and the XP. Two members of the Oklahoma Space Industrial Development Authority, Executive Director Bill Khourie and Operations Director Joe Savage, also assisted in supporting Rocketplane at this event.

Other exhibits ranged from simulators, games, small rockets to interactive and educational activities. While there were other teams showing their product, Rocketplane stood out as a leader in the space tourism market. As one woman who signed up to buy a seat on the XP stated, “Frankly, you guys are the only ones out here that look like you can really make it!”

The Rocketplane crew was extremely pleased with the event turnout. The Foundation quoted a headcount of 15,000 entrants, although other estimates were as high as 20,000. Throughout the event, feedback from media, the public, and potential clients was very positive. The crowd clearly expressed they would prefer to ride in a vehicle that is similar and familiar to them, as opposed to the throwback approach of riding on a rocket or missile.

In addition to the expo, Business Development Director Charles Lauer attended a three-day symposium sponsored by the X PRIZE CUP Foundation, headed by Peter Diamandis. Lauer was accompanied by Misuzu Onuki, Rocketplane’s Japanese consultant, and a film crew for Channel 12 that exclusively interviewed Rocketplane employees and two Japanese customers. The footage was in preparation for the Spaceweek International Association Board of Directors Meeting held in Fukuoka, Japan that began Oct. 17, 2005.
