Chris Walker
comes to the show to discuss California public education and the space work force.  Chris practices legislative and regulatory advocacy before the California State Legislature and Departments and agencies of the executive branch of government.  He is an experienced trade association advocate specializing in education issues, air quality issues, transportation issues, and local, state and federal environmental law.  Chris is also experienced in professional association management and has served as the assistant executive director to two national organizations.

Sy Liebergot
, author of Apollo EECOM, end Edition, returns. Sy Liebergot, author and NASA flight controller during the Apollo and post-Apollo years  began his engineering career with North American Aviation in Downey, CA before graduating from California State University-Los Angeles with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1963. His space career began at North American at the very inception of the Apollo lunar program when he joined a newly formed Flight Operations Group. In 1964, he transferred to Houston, Texas as a member of the Flight Operations Group in support of NASA Mission Operations at the Manned Spacecraft Center, which had just opened.  Mr. Liebergot switched over to NASA after about a year to qualify for a “front room” flight controller position in the mission control center in order to “get in on the action.” He became a veteran flight controller of many flights serving as Operations and Procedures Officer on AS-202, as Assistant Flight Director On AS-501 (the first Saturn V launch), and as EECOM (Electrical, Environmental, Consumables) Flight Controller on Apollo missions 8 – 15.  Sy was the Lead EECOM Flight Controller for Apollo missions 12 – 15 and an EGIL (Skylab EECOM) for all of the Skylab program missions. On the international scene, he was the Lead EECOM for the American-Russian Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) mission. He contributed his experience to early shuttle missions and to the space station design.  Sy was at the focal point of the crisis on Apollo 13 when the spacecraft oxygen tank exploded. He has advised and contributed to several books concerning Apollo 13  including the movie,  Apollo 13; and was the technical adviser for an archival multi-media CD-ROM entitled Apollo 13, A Race Against Time, which is devoted to the Apollo 13 mission. He has appeared in the PBS NOVA series, the History Channel Modern Marvels, and the acclaimed Public Broadcast System documentary Apollo 13, To The Edge and Back. He served as the on-camera host for a space documentary entitled In the Shadow of the Moon, produced by the CBS affiliate in Austin, Texas. He recently has published his autobiography entitled Apollo EECOM: Journey Of A Lifetime.  As part of the Apollo 13 Operations Team, Sy was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He also received the NASA Commendation Award for his leadership role in the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project international space mission. He has also been honored as Distinguished Alumnus of his alma mater’s School of Engineering and Technology.  Mr. Liebergot is employed by Spacehab Inc. where, as a Senior Project Engineer, he has designed astronaut neutral buoyancy trainers for the International Space Station (ISS) Sy was also a Senior ISS Configuration Management Analyst and is now retired, spending his time lecturing and teaching.

Dr. Sean Casey
plus four team members of the Google Lunar X Prize Team, TEAMFREDNET return.

Dr. Casey is a SOFIA project senior scientist with the Universities Space Research Association. SOFIA is the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy which is joint mission between NASA and the DLR. Since joining the project in 1997, Dr. Casey has coordinated the design and development of the nine first-light science instruments.  He now leads the science instrument integration team for early SOFIA science.  Dr. Casey’s personal research interests include the study of interstellar dust grain composition and their resultant optical absorption and emission properties. Dr. Casey did his undergraduate work at Knox College in Galesburg, IL and his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. He has worked at both NASA Goddard and Ames. While at Chicago and Goddard, he did a considerable amount of observing aboard the Kuiper Airborne Observatory which is the predecessor to SOFIA.  Dr. Casey recently completed a dual MBA from the Berkeley-Columbia executive business management program.

Fred J. Bourgeois, III is CEO and founder of Team FREDNET, an open source mission to land a vehicle on the Moon (www.teamfrednet.org).

Mr. Bourgeois has been dreaming and making plans to pursue space exploration since he was two. Originally from Waveland, Mississippi, Bourgeois spent most of his childhood and pre-college years in  Huntsville, Alabama, where he attended Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom High School. Mr. Bourgeois received his BSCS degree from Tulane University’s School of Engineering. After attending the Tulane Graduate School, he began a career in academia teaching Computer Science at the University of Minnesota, and later for Eaton Corporation’s Information Management Systems Division, and several University extension programs. His teaching for Eaton included support for clients utilizing satellite systems and networks, and command, control, and communications programs. Mr. Bourgeois worked as a  contractor on classified programs at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Following his work at JPL, Mr. Bourgeois came  to Silicon Valley to work for  MetaWare Incorporated as a Senior Compiler Developer after which he started his own software development and consulting business, FREDNET. In 1999, FREDNET was renamed Applios Inc. (Applied Open Source Technology) and continues to provide Software Development, Systems Engineering, Networking, and Information Security solutions today. Applios’ current and former clients include Lockheed Martin, NEC, AMD, Transmeta, Resilience, Sun, SJSU, many Silicon Valley startup companies, and a number of local, regional, and national Internet Service Providers.  Mr. Bourgeois can be reached at fred.bourgeois@teamfrednet.org.

Richard Core is one of the Team FREDNET founders and the mission’s project manager.  His interest in space started while growing up on a farm in Northern Michigan.  Mr. Core’s career in space started while working on a BSEE degree from the University of Michigan.  In college, he designed the data collection and analysis part of visual  experiments in pattern recognition and countermeasures for the  Willow Run Rad Labs.   Later, at the AEDC Large Rocket Facility of Arnold Air Force Base, he was part of testing program for the Saturn S-IVB J-1  Engine restart inside the labs’s altitude & environment chamber. Mr. Core also worked for Lockheed MSC as an Associate Responsible Engineer in the Space Systems Division on the Agena-D Vehicle program.  In  relocating to the Silicon Valley and joining Lockheed, Mr. Core was a Systems Analyst with the Missile Systems Division in the Office of the Chief Engineer doing  Polaris test flight simulation and analysis and Atmospheric EMP simulations.   While working for Lockheed, Mr. Core received an MS degree in Computer Science from Santa Clara University. Following Lockheed, Mr. Core served as the Project Lead on the first ever Desktop Color Terminal at Ramtek Corp and as a project ,manager  for the automatic visual inspection of bank notes.   For Peter Kiewitt  Co., Mr. Core developed all of the software for a North Slope Drilling Platform that rolled on the same tractors used for the Saturn 5  vehicle and worked on several robotic inspection systems for companies  like FMC and Intel.  Mr. Core later founded Santa Cruz Computer, which provided project management, programming, and testing services to a  host of clients including Microsoft, Intel, AMD, Belgium National Bank. In founding the company, Fred and Richard worked together and  attended an early example of social networking called the BluBerger Group.   While in the bay area, Mr. Core has done  business startup consultation and project management all around the Bay Area. Before Fred Bourgeois called, Mr. Core moved his family back to his home town  in Michigan to try to retire.

Wade Butcher is an early member of Team FREDNET and member of the business team. Originally from Mountain View California, Mr. Butcher’s interest in space began as a youngster growing up in Huntsville, Alabama during the heady days of the space race. In Huntsville, he attended Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom High School where he met and became friends with Mr. Bourgeois. After receiving his BS degree in Biology from the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama, he began his career at the University of Alabama, Birmingham in the Department of Biochemistry where he studied the molecular mechanisms of bacterial adhesion in septic arthritis and deep tissue infection. Mr. Butcher continued these studies at the University of Pittsburgh Dental School where he also studied the pathogens causing Lyme disease and Legionnaires disease. Also at this time, Mr. Butcher became interested in the emerging world wide web and founded Mezclar Designs which provided web design and development services. Mr. Butcher then managed clinical drug trials at ASTHMA Inc. in Seattle Washington before permanently shifting away from biology to concentrate on web and software development.  He has worked for Walt Disney and Fox where he has managed software development, project management, quality assurance and design teams.

Mr. Barrucco is the lead GNC engineer for Team FREDNET of the Lunar  X-Prize helping the team with all aspects of mission design and project and engineering design management.  As with others on Team FREDNET, Mr. Barrucco is inspired to contribute to the exploration of  our solar system through the engineering design process for human, lunar, and inter-planetary missions.  He is a graduate of Penn State University with a B.S. aerospace engineering with emphasis on spacecraft propulsion. As a student, Mr. Barrucco interned at the Air Force Research Laboratory researching aspects of hall effect thrusters.  After graduating from Penn State, he worked as a aerospace engineer at the Naval Research Laboratory in the space navigation  section on space mission designs and various satellite constellations. Mr. Barrucco is currently a full time engineer with Honeywell Aerospace and is pursuing a masters degree from the University of Southern California in Astronautical Engineering with an emphasis in  space propulsion and navigation.

Dr. Pat Patterson
and the new director of the Space Dynamics Lab at Utah State University, Dr. Doug Lemon return for our annual SmallSat program.

Dr. Pat Patterson is currently the manager of the Small Satellite and Associated Technologies group within Utah State University’s Space Dynamics Laboratory (USU/SDL), and is the Chairman of the annual AIAA/USU Conference on Small Satellites.  He has also held positions as the Director of the Innovative Science and Engineering Division as well as the Director of Business Development at USU/SDL. He also served on the AIAA Space Systems Technical Committee for a three year term.  Since the early 1990’s he has been involved in research, operations, and management associated with small spacecraft and sounding rockets.  The research for his Ph.D. dissertation was done based on data collected during the flights of the Coupling of Dynamics and Aurora (CODA) I and II missions.  His doctoral research investigated the effects of disturbances caused by sounding rockets on the measurement of atomic oxygen using the resonant fluorescence technique in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere.

Dr. Douglas Lemon of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is the new director of the Space Dynamic Laboratory at Utah State University.  He obtained his bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. in physics at Utah State University and was raised in Cache Valley.  While at PNNL, Lemon worked in various roles, most recently on Homeland Security issues, and as director of lab strategies since 2007. Those responsibilities include identifying trends and opportunities, and overseeing PNNL’s research and development initiatives.  As director at the Space Dynamic Laboratory, a nonprofit research corporation owned by Utah State University, Lemon will oversee about 400 employees. The lab works primarily on building instrumentation for space observation and with infrared imaging technology.  Lemon comes to the new job with experience in satellite imaging and remote sensing he got nine years ago while working as CEO of Advanced Geographic Information Systems Inc. The company was a PNNL technology spin-off company.  The Utah laboratory has designed, made and operated nearly 500 payloads, including shuttle experiments, small satellites and satellite-based sensor systems.
