Post Do you know Raymond Orteig ?   Posted on: Tue Oct 05, 2004 4:54 pm
Charles Lindbergh received from Raymond Orteig 25.000 $ in 1927.
Lindbergh is very famous, but Orteig is like the "X" for the X-Prize. Orteig is the mister "X" ...
Who know better this man ?
Who his interested to know his life ?

Another American success story who gave back to his adopted country and to mankind in general:

"Raymond Orteig emigrated to New York from France in 1912. He worked as a bus boy and café manager and eventually acquired two New York Hotels which were popular with French airmen assigned to duty in the United States during the Great War. ..."

Thank you Ralph, but the information available in the web is partially not correct and very poor!
Raymond Orteig emigrated from Béarn, south of France, October 1882, when he was 13 years old.
He joined his oncle in New York, who was butcher. Started to work in hotels. If you whant to know more, tell me.

Thanks... I wondered how he gained ownership of hotels so quickly.... 1882 makes more sense :D .

Post Orteig and Diamandis moneymen   Posted on: Tue Oct 26, 2004 9:28 pm
Quote:
"Unlike Orteig, however, Diamandis is far more than just the moneyman. "
wrote recently Helen O'Neill, from the Associated Press, on the article reprodruced many times on newspapers.

Mr. Diamandis is a moneyman, I discovered.
Raymond Orteig was only just a moneyman ? Says Helen.
She doesn't know anything, or so little, about Raymond Orteig, apparently. She knows better about Diamandis, because seems to be easier.

This need to be corrected. It is one more reason why the Raymond Orteig life story must be written...

Don't believe everything you read.

I'm interested in this statement of yours ...
The ghost of Orteig wrote:

Do you mean that you also discovered he is a moneyman but was unable to find out that he was anything more? Which suggests your research skills aren't up to par. Or did you mean to say that you discovered Diamandis to be "only" a moneyman? Which suggests that Ms O'Neill is lying. My apologies if I misunderstand you. English as a language leaves much to be desired.

Dr_Keith_H, yes, as the ghost of Orteig, I have to reconize that today I know more about Orteig than Diamandis. Before to read Helen O'Neill article, I was thinking that Diamandis wa a philantropist. I'm so naïve...
Reading an other sentence on the same Helen O'Neill article,
Quote:
But it wasn't Lindbergh that captivated Diamandis. It was Orteig.

Which compensate my desappointment.

I was very satisfied: Diamandis is more than a moneyman !

After his transaltantic travel, Lindbergh became very rich. But 5 years later Orteig was obliged to sale one of his hotel. Who was the winner, the monneyman ?

(My english is so poor, and the english language is so rich, please be indulgent)
