what ramifications would there be if on a future flight they exceed the distance and not able to return? What safety precautions are there to make sure that you can control the distance?

I'm not sure if this is the answer you want but usually they limit their fuel to "around" the desired altitude. :wink:

there is a saying "The sky is the limit", what is the limit really. I'm all for expanding our horizons but there must be some guidelines. It will get to the point where somebody will want to out do the other.

This is what we all want to happen. Ultimately no one is going to build hardware worth millions of dollars just to launch it too high and break apart on re-entry.

I can't see this being a problem.
