The Global Positioning System is a navigation system, so what's the difference between positioning and navigation?

Is it that positioning yields only the position, while navigation provides more (e.g. velocity, orientation)?

The "Global Positioning System" is a constellation of satellites which orbit in predictable patterns and broadcast precisely timed signals. The GPS signals allows a ground receiver unit to passively determine its location on or above the Earth's surface. That is "positioning". That ground unit can then use software and position updates to "navigate" as in determine direction, speed, etc. and to plot a path or course to follow to reach some other position. All of which is done by the receiver.
