Quote:
One in four Americans are completely unfamiliar with Nicolaus Copernicus's 1543 theory that the Earth circles the Sun, according to a study by the National Science Foundation.

The survey, released on Friday at an annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, asked 2,200 people nine factual questions about physical and biological science, with the average score being just 5.8 correct answers.

The question - "Does the Earth go around the Sun, or does the Sun go around the Earth" - was answered incorrectly by 26 per cent of respondents.
Fewer than half of the respondents - 48 per cent - are aware that humans evolved from earlier species of animals and just 39 percent answered correctly that "the universe began with a huge explosion".

A total of 42 per cent of Americans said that astrology is either "very scientific" or "sort of scientific".

No wonder humanity is so useless, why cant we just dump all this mumo jumbo and be taught science not religion and all the other crap!

Or, people are trolls. Do you seriously believe that a quarter of people don't believe in a heliocentric solar system?

Id be willing to bet that a bunch of people, interrupted from doing their regular lives to answer random trivia questions about stuff they haven't thought about since high school, would answer incorrectly just so the annoying survey taker would go away.

Actually I've heard statistics like these before so I'm not surprised. I can also tell stories of people who should know more but don't like the maint. tech with an associates degree constantly misspelling words and calling AC voltage positive or negative. Or the engineers that believe GMO's are deadly and that radiation from Fukushima is killing us all and don't know what a 3-D printer is.

I have a hypothesis about people choosing the wrong Shepard's. That is choosing who we trust for information. I would get into that but that's too much to write about now.

I will tell of a supervisor who was cutting plastic off that leaked on 480VAC wires with the power on. Stoopid is every where.

The surprising thing about this report (or a similar one - didn't read it), is that Europeans score worse than Americans, which leads me to believe it's just bogus!

I think religion is a major stumbling block on scientific progress. Countries in the Middle East and the USA have huge amounts of religious fanatics who wouldnt believe science because of the Bible etc.

The UK seems to have a dying Christian system (a growing Muslim one though) Science is just more widely accepted.

Religious belief is not incompatible with rational thought or scientific knowledge/education. There are plenty of ignorant and "stupid" non-religious people around the world.

Don't simplistically stereotype.

But it does mean that you believe things happened one way (As told by whichever book it is you follow) and are not open to any suggestion that things happened differently to the beliefs that are placed into you.

If you believe God created the world you wont stop and say no you are right he didnt, my whole belief system is wrong. Well you might... but you would have admitted your book was wrong. The same as if you believe God created us in his image, not as evolving organisms.

Note I am talking about religious beliefs not spiritual ones.

----

But yes, there are as many stupid non religious people. I just believe they havent been brainwashed into one mindset as easily.

My "Book" (the Christian Bible specifically) does not say anything like that. What you are mentioning, obviously 2nd or 3rd hand from well worn Atheist talking points, are the interpretation by other people of the parables and stories from the Bible, which also were written by other people a long long time ago. You want absolutes, when that really isn't the point. Science is for absolute fact and literalism, religion is for context and sociocultural integration. There is no conflict there unless you are looking for one to push a belief agenda (one way or the other).

Careful your bias is showing. Non-religious people are just as easily brainwashed as anyone else. Look at all the horrors perpetrated in the name of Fascism, Communism, etc.

The common denominator is the imperfect human, not religion.

So you are telling me that if someone believes God created the world they can at the same time believe that it was formed in the way science currently understands? Clouds of dust spinning around a star etc?

Despite being completely in belief that their God created the world, they can hold a counter belief which states that didnt happen?

Even if an overwhelming amount of data pointed in that direction they wouldnt give up their religious belief that their God created it as it would undermined their whole belief system.

You cant say that people who believe things were formed by a God can simultaneously hold a counter belief which states their religious belief is wrong.

Scientific minds will look for and evaluate new data, religious minds cant do that in the same way as it would mean the "facts" they believe are wrong.

If it was scientifically proven beyond reasonable doubt that we had evolved from a single celled organism, religious people wouldnt look at that and say yep you are right, we werent formed as humans by a God. Their beliefs stop their open minded thinking.

Sigh... Are you drinking?

Our current understanding and theory of the universe is highly influenced by Jedeo-Christian theology and thinking. The Big Bang Theory etc.

No, they can be easily reconciled if you don't get hung up on literal interpretations of Bible stories told to children.

LOL. No. "Scientific minds" get just as ossified on their beliefs and "facts" as anyone else.

Unless of course God devised the biochemistry and chose evolution as the means by which to form all of life (including the current Homo Spaien species that thinks it is so special)?

IFIFY in case you could not recognize your own irony.

This is hilarious! Like speaking to a 19th century monk!

I think you are a little lost.

You are just making up poor excuses to hide science with "Oh God could have done that too" it is like Christians saying dinosaur bones are put there to test us, you make an un-winnable scenario.

In your trail of thought I could show you any facts and you would argue God "Could" have had something to do with it. We cant say he didnt but neither the less you are ruling out that a lot of religious people do believe everything word for word and that is my point! Religion can stop people looking for answers as they believe their books give them all of that.

There are a number of people, likely in the tens of thousands if not hundreds all over the world who will believe what they are told and they are "hung up" on the literal aspects of the books. This hinders science, point made.

Our theories of the universe are based on what we have observed for a start. Many parts of religious beliefs have been put together because they couldnt explain science, it doesnt mean science is based on their thinking it just means they were presented with the same real life events and made it fit to their preconceptions.

Another mad thing!

Quote:
A Missouri lawmaker has proposed what ranks among the most anti-evolution legislation in recent years, which would require schools to notify parents if "the theory of evolution by natural selection" was being taught at their child's school and give them the opportunity to opt out of the class.
The bill had its first public hearing Thursday after being introduced in late January.

State Rep. Rick Brattin (R), who sponsored the bill, told a local TV station last week that teaching only evolution in school was "indoctrination."

"Our schools basically mandate that we teach one side," he told KCTV. "It is an indoctrination because it is not objective approach."

The bill is one of several anti-evolution proposals that have already appeared in statehouses across the country; the Daily Beast counted four states (Missouri, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Virginia) where legislation had been introduced. The proposals would allow for a range of approaches to evolution, from presenting a "debate" over evolution versus creationism to requiring that local school boards allow intelligent design to be included in biology courses.
