I designed a really small fighter and got sorta adjusted to small power settings.

I tried to sell a rocket jet engine hybrid..was not successfull.

Possibly my idea of the hybrid jet/rocket lead to solar/rocket craft ???

I was actually told not to design any fighters for the AF here. AF folks considered it annoying...and futile.

I was concerned about the possible future AF acquisitions ..and its costs. I put my " Kelly Johnson hat " on for a moment and made these two stealth fighters.

Back to space exploration ! I have since increased the AR to 36.

This I assume should get to 30 km altitude as a solar powered prop plane.

It is already obsolete. It has a seat for a human pilot in it.

Our AF chief mentioned in a newspaper that the drones won't cost any less than future fighters do. Wonder if he was right.

Here is what the thermal flying could bring about for this ship.

It could have 100 times better power to weight ratio than an HPA get !

Actually an interwar era fighter power to weight ratio...with 21st century aerodynamics and structures.

Doubtful. A manned fighter will be much harder and expensive to match spec for spec performance with a UCAV. An unmanned system is a lot cheaper because it doesn't have to be "man-rated", or carry an ejection seat & life-support etc. Plus you add in the long term cost of selecting, training, and paying very specialized operators (fighter pilots) and drones are a lot cheaper.

"Solar Eagle":

Why not just make it an actual flying wing?

The flying wing sections display much lower Cl max and cl in general...also you cannot have the straight panels that produce more power..it couldn't carry the space craft either...without long legs.

Strong arrow/sweep also means that is not an efficient climber. Lots of the span efficiency is lost...also tips have to be strongly aerodynamically twisted..ie non lifting. But they look cool.

OTOH I may be wrong too...about flying wings.

Somehow they seem unstable.

The slot I am trying to enter is high lift relatively low drag but maximal surface area. My "cure" is to go there slowly...at really low ( indicated ) air speed.

My HIPPI was an attempt to make a 45 kilo motorized plane.

For some reason Strato Launch also believes in traditional aeroplane.

Here is Solar Eagle ( bigger Platypus ) with SS-3.

What...I read Burt said SS-3 is no longer his project...Scaled Composites apparently ?

Scaled Composites IS Rutan. Everything that comes out of it bears his influence, even if he doesn't design/build it himself.

Is he still in charge of the Scaled Composites ?
