Re: Optical computer Posted on: Tue Jan 29, 2013 3:13 pm IIUC only at about 0.5c in copper wiring on a chip, due to reflections, which is about 5cm per clock cycle in a modern desktop or server CPU, which is on the order of a centimetre across. Quite tight a constraint! Also loss is lower I think, which would result in less heat, and bandwidth is higher.

light has an order of magnitude more data capacity per "packet" without resistance, and with all the data that can fit in a channel, and the fact that it can travel with fiber, or through a vacuume, or through a medium like a gas, means routing can be dynamic, so connection A->B can change to A->C without a new motherboard the idea is that the whole system can be modified, whenever, for whatever reason, so you could add pieces, remove them etc, or change the function of a device based on the task, _________________ Let not the bindings of society hold you back from improving it.... the masses follow where the bold explore. |
