Hi all
Once Spaceshipone goes up again and claims the x-prize, what should be the next thing? How about a prize for the first privately finanzed microsatellite to go into orbit? I think that far more amature teams would be able to compeat for something like that. What do you think? Oeivind Hansen Oslo. Norway |

The first privately funded microsat went into orbit in 1961. It was called Oscar 1. Here's a history of the first amateur satellite program.

Maybe an "X2-Prize" for something like a manned trans-Pacific sub-orbital hop.
Somewhat less demanding than going all the way to orbit, and it would demonstrate the technology for true suborbital passenger transport, as opposed to straight-up-and-down "barnstorming" trips like SpaceShipOne's... |

What I ment(but didn`t write) was: That the microsatellite would have to be placed into orbit by a privately finanzed/designed/manufactured rocket system. |

I think that's about to happen fairly soon. SpaceX's first payload is going to be a government customer, but IIRC they have a private payload going up pretty soon. SpaceDev will be close at their heels with the Streaker rocket (which will use a first stage with a developmental heritage that goes back to the engine on SpaceShipOne, just to keep things topical). I'm not sure if Kistler counts as a privately developed LV since it uses old soviet engines, and has used NASA money towards its development.

I had the privilege of listening and even making a few radio contacts through them back in the 1070s. --Ralph WA4NUO _________________ --Ralph Roberts CEO, Creativity, Inc. author of THE HUNDRED ACRE SPACESHIP http://1vid.com |
