All you have to do is look at the le morte d'arthur or Shakespeare to see how terribly the British spell.

First of all, the dead sea scrolls were written not 500 years ago, but 1900 years ago. And the spelling is exactly the same as in modern Hebrew. And the Dead Sea Scrolls contain parts from the Bible, which was written down far earlier.
Of course I'm joking. I was joking from the beginning. ![]() _________________ “Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” -Anonymous |

The 500 was for Shakespear. I know the DSS's are a bit older.....
Interesting that Hebrew hasn't changed, although I imagine the Greek and Aramaic sections have changed somewhat. |

500 years ago, written English was still in the development stage. When the dead sea scrolls were written, written Hebrew had been in use for over a millenia.

Not like English caught on, nor like the Greek of Alexander's time caught on, or the Latin of the Romans, or the Babylonian of the Babylonians, or the Egyptian of the Pharoahs . . . _________________ “Once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” -Anonymous |

Here in The Netherlands we learn British English at school. I'm not sure if US spelling would be considered incorrect though. I try to avoid it, but sometimes the differences are subtle, especially when it's more about choice of words than about spelling. How many foreigners know which of "parking lot" and "car park" is UK English, and which is US English? And most scientific journals use US English I think, so I'll have to switch when writing papers for publication.

A short laugh or sarcastic comment. I know it's rather colloquial Americana. Sorry.
