Next Generation Robot explorers & Private Sector

It has been said that as robots get more advanced, the need for human exploration will go down. Robots that have basic A.I and can plan their own routes on a planetary surface already exist. (on Mars). In the context of the private sector though, would a profit be made from launching their own robotic explorers? I believe it could, and would give this industry a heap of much needed credibility. What do you think?
