Post Estes Model Rocket Line Up   Posted on: Tue Nov 01, 2005 2:04 pm
I was just wondering if anyone here know why there was no Armadillo Aerospace rocket in the Estes X-Prize rocket line up? I was a little disappointed when I saw that.

I had actually been wondering that too. It may be because our design was changing so much, or it may be something as simple as that we didn't supply proper plans. In any case, I have never heard the actual answer.

Maybe they had trouble making it land vertically?

The guy who designs the actualy Estes rockets can be found over at www.starshipmodeler.net

He calls himself roguepink there. I suggested a very simple SEA DRAGON to no avail. He has his hands full with the SS1 model.

I would imagine that's a pain to make a functional model of, much less one that's mass-marketable.

It would be awesome to have a White Knight model plane which could launch an SS1 model rocket :). I guess it would be very tricky to get the rocket to go up though, instead of shooting off horizontally from underneath the plane.

It might be posible to shove a model out of the back of the plane, like the Air Launch in last weeks Av Week. It made the cover. The photographer took the picture that made the cover in close up--making the tiny air launch rocket look like Sea Dragon.

I have a video of a model B-52 dropping a X-1, it looks pretty good. The X-1 was R/C powered by a D or E size engine maybe.

Cool! OK, where is the link to the video? I want to see it too!

BTW, the X-1 was dropped from a B-29, not a B-52.

Soon as I get home I will dig up the video and post it.

Not sure why I said b-52... oh well

Edit:
Here is a low rez of it, about middle of page.
