Hello, jpowell,
under www.jpaerospace.com there is a very large Ascender to be seen. What is the reason to build now the small Ascender to be seen on the photographs www.xprizenews.org links to today? Dipl.-Volkswirt (bdvb) Augustin (Political Economist) |

The new Ascender is being built to test some major structural upgrades to the vehicle. The size is a practical consideration. It needs to fit out the door of the hanger we use in Texas.
It's still pretty big, just over a hundred feet long. The hanger in Sacramento, California that you see the 175 foot Ascender in is a lot bigger, however, we can only build there. There are airspace issues with flying from there. The 100 foot Ascender can be built cheaper than a larger vehicle and we can still try out all the new stuff. The pics I think your refering to are just of a two foot model. |

My guess would be that they want to test the aerodynamics of a different shape for the balloons.
