Post NEED ADVICE, OPINIONS, & GUIDANCE TO REACH MY GOALS!!!   Posted on: Mon Feb 25, 2013 7:24 pm
Hey anyone & everyone,

My name is Morgan and I have always had an obsession with stars, time, energy, & especially outer space.

My primary goal is to educate myself so that I may one day work for Virgin Galactic, travel into outer space, explore it, and assist in the journey to allowing others to explore outer space as fast as possible.

Im willing to do absolutely anything to reach this goal so i basically need ALL the opinions, advice, and guidance i can possibly get.

So far I know that i HAVE to join the military to fund my education and gain experience and something nice to put on my resume.

But I need more information on EVERYTHING!

HELP, HELP, HELP!

If you're dreaming about Space: learn Stars' language first. Find related audios, "wow" signal, compare data. Watch "Contact" with Judi Foster. This is about our dreams, consequency and determination, and what we can achieve at the end of our challenge. When I was 13 I spoke grandfather about UFO, when I was 15 I built up my telescope, one year late I built photo-optic device and I fall in love with photonics. First time I though about powerade continentes using photon's energy and time difference between day and night zone. After 33 years of dreaming, researching, working and seven years work only for project purpose the idea dedicated to seven billion people from planet Earth is alive. This story is about a young boy who dreamed.

Hmm - I'll take a punt on this as being a serious request and therefore give a serious response...or at least as serious as I get anyway

First off, you don't say where you're from or how old you are, so I'll just guess you're from the UK and aged in your teens. In my opinion you don't need to join the military in order to do anything. That's one possible path though, and if you do then I would suggest you take a long hard look at the range of careers that the three services offer and then see which of the three fits both your strengths/abilities and your eventual goals, as what you do when you leave should be what you [plan your career path on in that particular case.

As to the Virgin Galactic 'dream', that's just space tourism and won't really fit what you want as far as I can see. You'd be better off working for someone like DSI (Deep Space Industries) or Planetary Resources really...if they ever make it of course. As to your education though, all things in space are built on a solid scientific and mathematical foundation, so you'll need to focus on those really and aim to get at least a degree in say Aerospace Engineering or something like that. You may then find a field you want to specialise in further and head for a PhD or you may not - time will be the best indicator on that.

If I had my time over again I'd think about a space related degree at the University of Surrey after working hard to get good maths and physics/science grades at school and college (A levels or a National Diploma). That would get you into the position to work for SSTL and from there you could move into any of the space industries.

Anyway, hope that helps someone at least

He is probably from the US. Americans prefer lower taxes over government services, which leaves a significant fraction of poorer people unable to pay for the education that could help them improve their situation. But a US social democrat party would be about as viable as a tulip on the moon, so for many the only way left to escape poverty is to join the military to pay for college.

Anyway, good advice, work very hard on maths and science and get a degree in aeronautical engineering or physics. Another way may be to go to medical school and specialise in physiology and space flight. If those seem unreachable or uninteresting there may be a third option that hasn't been used much if at all so far, and that is plant physiology, hydroponics, closed loop ecosystems, that sort of stuff. If we really do manage to colonise space, then those first colonists are going to be farmers, just like they were here on Earth.

Finally, building rockets is hard! While it may not get you into space, becoming an excellent welder with knowledge of welding exotic metals (aluminum/titanium/lithium alloys) could very well land you a job building rockets.

Finally, here's some advice from NASA.

My advice would be to stick to what you love best but work hard at whatever you do. My brother would walk through sewerage to earn $1/hour is he thought it would bring him a skill towards his goals. He is now one of Australia's top satellite experts.

I do everything just about back to front but get by with pure perserverence and trying to be polite to everyone.

Laurens is a Marxist. He is against income gaps - he would prefer that everyone be poor. :D :P

Study math and science - in particular, physics. There will always be a need for scientists and engineers in space related industries and jobs. And even if you don't work in a space related industry, you will always have job opportunities with a degree in those fields (as opposed to a degree in the Philosophy of the Motion of Thumbs in Relation to Finger Twiddling). How good are you at math?

Good advice, SuperShuki. I'm an older than average student (with way more miscellaneous job experience than average), and if there's one thing I could do differently academically it would be to keep up my math skills. So many applications in so many fields, especially anything to do with aerospace.

But for me the dream of actually going into space* has given way to a strong motivation to promote space exploration and development to others. And the good news is, I can do this even while I'm in school. Here's a link to a 3d animation I made for my Senior Project last fall...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPYYk5wQq2c
...and the blooper reel...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SDPEV4Wx4E
(I was told by another forum member that the bloopers were the best)

This project was fun to work on, helped me get a degree, helped build a portfolio, and reached a lot of my classmates and friends with the message that space tourism is a developing industry, with real potential.

My advice would be to do what you're good at and what you're interested in... but never underestimate your potential to develop new skills as your interests change and mature. Stretch yourself, try new things and work hard - I know it's a cliche, but it works... or so they tell me

*That's not to say I wouldn't go if I had the chance!
