Hybrid rocket pioneer and expert William Colburn, is teaching a Hybrid Design Class in the Mojave (California, USA) at the FAR Site on Dec 28th through 30th. The details are on the Hybriddyne.com forum.

Part of the fee goes for the Pyro Operator to be present during static testing and launches. A simple lunch will be provided each day. Water will be available at all times. The fee will be held in escrow by the FAR non-profit until the class is firm and will be fully refundable in the event the class is cancelled. Here is the schedule as of the end of July. Day 1 is December 28th, 2007. Hybrid Propulsion Class One classroom session of 6 hours 1. Hybrid History 2. Hybrid Theory 3. Component design considerations 4. Propellant combinations and performance prediction 5. Lunch break on site 6. Features affecting performance 7. Grain Design 8. Regression rate theory (including erosion and mass flux effects) 9. Unresolved problems in Hybrid Technology Two Lab Sessions each lasting a day at a remote desert site. (one weekend) 1. Hybrid Operations Safety 2. Casting Hybrid Grains (HTPB or PBAN) 3. Lunch break on site 4. Data Acquisition Session 5. Static firing 54mm hybrid propulsion system Second Day Session 1. Static firing large motor cast at the site. 2. Assignment to a Launch Operator Position and engage in launch operations at the remote site under supervision of a licensed operator 3. Lunch break on site 4. Launch attendee’s vehicles 5. Launch Hybrid Sounding Rocket Tour of a Rocket Plane facility (end of second day at weekend). Optional Dinner In Mojave at end of facility tour. Introduction to California Pyro Operator Requirements (most stringent, applies to all states). Materials supplied: Hybrid Propulsion Manual, latest revision Original GIRD information, first hybrid vehicle to be launched, translated from the Russian with cutaway diagram not shown in the USA. Original German work in the 1930’s, a translated German report on the hybrid RATO developed for their bomber aircraft A 38mm monocoque hybrid propulsion system Hybrid Class Clothing recommendations Jul 30th, 2007, 12:44pm December will offer moderate weather at the Mojave Desert. Nights will be quite cold. Wind may come up during the day. We have shelters to retire to in the event of wind. Dress accordingly. |
