I've seen some diethyl zinc used for rocket and missile fuel.
Could anyone tell me more about that. |

Sorry. Tried but I couldn't find anything about it except in a medical context. http://astronautix.com/props/index.html doesn't even have it.
Anyway, welcome to the boards! We're glad to have you. _________________ American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering In Memoriam... Apollo I - Soyuz I - Soyuz XI - STS-51L - STS-107 |

Info I found rocket related:
Quote: No, kerosene is a classic nonpolar solvent and permanganate is a salt. You might be able to pursuade an alcohol mixture with a few % water to dissolve enough permanganate to be hypergolic with peroxide, but I'd guess that the solubility would be poor and the salt would be in danger of crystallizing out. For kerosene, it might be possible to add a touch of diethyl zinc to make it hypergolic with peroxide yet not make it pyrophoric with moist air. Having worked with DEZ in the distant past, that's not a game I'd like to play myself. I'm happy with a good simple augmented spark igniter since it works with anything we've picked from column A and column B. (And with six you get eggroll.) Oxidizers Fuels LOX Alcohol GOX Propane N2O Ethane We haven't tried it with kerosene, but that's just personal prejudice- I'm confident that it too would light off nicely. -- Doug Jones, Rocket Plumber XCOR Aerospace http://yarchive.net/space/rocket/ignition.html Came across a very nice intresting page: http://www.bnl.gov/esh/shsd/cms/Safety_ ... bility.htm (to learn something new), but this is off topic Quote: INFORMATION VITAL TO ADVANCED JUNIOR ROCKET SCIENTISTS 1. Bliss Debriefing Of German Scientists - Operation Paperclip 70% Zinc Diethyl 30% mineral oil (synonyms- dialin, dialin zuencoel) diethyl zinc http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/don/dt/dt1022.html From what I see... some people talk about it... but not much is found in google about it, so I guess no-one or almost no-one really uses it for rockets and missile fuel etc. _________________ Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible. - Lord Kelvin, 1892 |

Props to Sigurd for the research, I couldn't find anything. Welcome to the forums Katja.
