Nasa scientists say hundreds of computer files that accumulated on their Mars rover Spirit may have caused the problems that have crippled it.

These "cruise files" will now be deleted from the second Mars rover Opportunity before it rolls on to Mars to begin its science mission.

The article "Mars Rover's Unexpected Behavior Puzzles NASA" ( ... litch.html ) is reporting the most recent data problems:
apparently failed to even record any of its actions on Sunday

There also have been similar problems since 2004 that all have been solved.

So a lot has been learned regarding assistance for equipment on Mars.

What impacts could that have on and for future manned missions?
