Post Pressure- and temperature-sensitive artificial skin invented   Posted on: Wed Aug 17, 2005 10:14 am
www.wissenschaft.de is reporting today that the japanese scientist Takao Someya and his team have invented an articial skin which is sensitive to pressure and temperature. It would improve robots. The article links to www.pnas.org and refers to "doi:10.1073/pnas.0502392102". The only name given as signature is Takao Someya.

Possibly this artificial skin super-human skils, capabilities or properties could be given by improvemnets, increases of precisety and exactness...

What about using this articial skin for Mars rovers to improve their capability to handle problems like the Purgatory dune? Could it contribute to the "Tracked or wheeled"-thread by equipping the wheels or the tracks by this skin?

What about using this skin on the parts of landers which touch the surface of a planet/body/object and especially those which touch down first and to involve those parts actively in the control of engines etc.?

What about - last but not least - using this artificial skin for space suits?

That sounds like a great idea. In the near term, here is something to think about. Some of the older space suits used on ISS are going to burn up as part of the Suit Sat project I read about in popular science. With Delta II to be canceled--its tooling, this new skin and older suits are all freed up for any entreprenure who could purchase, say the tooling for the Delta II--the design of a Suit Sat rescued--and use that as a template for a new suit with artificial skin. You would have a good bit of a space program just with that.
