 Interesting concept... Posted on: Wed Jul 13, 2005 8:46 amThe article "Bat Ship Begins" ( www.xprizenews.org/index.php?p=1008 ) obviously is talking about something like inflatable wings for a reusable suborbital first stage.
I already wondered last year if that is possible but thought my thoughts to be too vague to post them here. Currently that seems to be changing. Would it be possible to use that wing-technology for renetering vehicles too? A modified CXV perhaps - which has the cooling of the actual CXV-design too but includes inflatable wings? You would have had to have thought of it by the late 1950's. Inflatable re-entry vehicles have been on the drawing board for a *long* time; Goodyear proposed an inflatable craft for the Dyna Soar, and another company proposed inflatable wings much like the "bat ship" wings with a rigid leading edge & thin membrane, but with the leading edge being an inflatable structure, for recovery of Titan solids, individual crewman rescue, Saturn S-IC stage recovery, etc. |

Posted on: Tue Dec 23, 2008 1:58 pm Over at NewMars, in the Interplanetary Transportation section under Reentry we are discussing inflatables for reentry. Since 15% of the craft has to be heat shielding, it would cut the weight down a lot.
