http://www.isr.us/SEScienceFAQs.asp#12 Couldn't a space elevator be built using current materials? It seems a space elevator could be built without the development of novel carbon nanotube ribbons or some other super-strong material. More conventional materials could be used, by incorporating small propulsion systems at regular intervals along the elevator to counter-act the forces that attempt to place stress on the system. These engines would need a lot of fuel and servicing. Imagine keeping 40 shuttles running continuously. ------------------------------------- do you think they mean pumping gas to rockets with a 300km long gas pipe ? or they mean standart rockets carrying all gas including itself ? if they mean pumping gas to 300km altitude and climb elevator on this gas hose, do you know any scientific report or calculation info about this idea ? |
