Apparently, Florida is still hoping to snatch the X PRIZE CUP even though it has been awarded to New Mexico. According to this AP article, "The Florida Space Authority is ready to step back into the race to host the first privately funded manned space flight if New Mexico's winning plan falters, officials said Wednesday."
Also interesting is the article's comment that "Tracy Hegler, the authority's spaceport transportation planning manager, told the board Florida's inability to match the $2 million in promotional money [offered by New Mexico] was the key reason why it lost the bid. California and Oklahoma also made proposals." On the other hand, ``I can't imagine they [New Mexico] can replicate some of the things we have for $7 million,'' said Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings." It's an interesting turn of events-- instead of the X PRIZE fighting to get publicity, the states are fighting over the X PRIZE! This is a win-win situation: the X PRIZE gets offers of money from the state governments, and the states get a chance for hi-tech economic development.
