Whilst searching for information on the exploratory work NASA did examining the LOX/CH4 engine possibilities for Moon/Mars landers I came across 2 papers.
http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archivenasa/casi.n ... 024434.pdf Liquid Oxygen / Liquid Methane Test Results of the RS-18 Lunar Ascent Engine at Simulated Altitude Conditions at NASA White Sands Test Facility Primarily it describes work with the RS-18 rocket engine tested at NASA White Sands Test Facility but it also discusses the work Armadillo did there. cold-flow testing conducted in April 2009 as part of a L02/methane engine test program conducted as an Innovative Partnership Program (IPP) with Armadillo Aerospace. Hot-fire testing of the Armadillo Aerospace engine. pyrotechnic vacuum ignition was demonstrated as part of the 2009 Armadillo Aerospace IPP engine testing Another paper is available here: 'PCAD Methane Progress To Date' http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi. ... 036803.pdf 'Propulsion Risk Reduction Activities for Non-Toxic Cryogenic Propulsion' this also has pretty pictures of LOx/LCH4 engines firing, including Figure 9.(b) Armadillo Aerospace dual bell nozzle engine. A basic overview of the The Propulsion and Cryogenic Advanced Development (PCAD) Project is available here: http://microgravity.grc.nasa.gov/Advanc ... ties/PCAD/ Perhaps if others find similar they could add links to this thread? |
