Davis, Leonard. CNN.com. 25 Nov. 2004. “Inflatable Space Module Wins Approval” <http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/11/25/space.approve/index.html>

Article Summary #9

Blueprints for the future space habitats that are inflatable have now been approved by the FAA-AST. Bigelow Aerospace of Las Vegas, Nevada, has planned a series of inflatable structures for space. These inflatable habitats would be easier and cheaper to send into space and may be the future for moon and mars resorts for people like you and me.

Personal Reaction

The FAA-AST (Federal Aviation Administration’s Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation) have sent an approval letter to Bigelow Aerospace for their futuristic design for cheap, cost effective space habitats on November 17th. Earlier this month, Bigelow Aerospace set off many entrepreneurs in a new direction toward space flight, such as the works of the Ansari X-Prize. A $50 million “Americas Space Prize”, a contest with a January 10, 2010 deadline to design an orbital spacecraft that can be “docked” to these inflatable structures which will hopefully be soon orbiting the planet and on other planets.

With a current launch date in 2005 where they will be bringing along with them the prototype inflatable structure into space we should all feel reassured that one day we can not only take a ride into space and back again. Yet, we can save up a great sum of money and maybe a week or so, head to the Mojave Desert take a ship into space, make a few orbits around the earth, “dock” onto one of the many Bigelow Inflatable Space Stations and maybe refuel, eat, drink, do your business then hop back onto your ship and head to the moon, all while being in space and weightless. Staying at the moon for the weekdays in a grand Inflatable Structured Resort to then repeat the trip back home. Now, ask yourself doesn’t that just sound AMAZING? After continuous trips of extremely high cost, and after all of the entrepreneurial productions have been paid off and the profits start rolling in for our already rich men and women out there making this trip possible, the prices should go down and down, far enough for us and our little wages to enjoy a space trip!
