I can think of many that were excellent just off the top of my head, but my favorite was Stranger In a Strange Land, simply for all the raw emotion in it, especially at the end. Do you grok?

i grok, and i agree. it's not only an awesome book, but it's written to the times so well. not that the themes in it aren't still relevant.....

Yeah, I'd read some of his other stuff like the most excellent The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, but never had I encountered a book with such depth before. That's what I really liked about that one, it was so deep that I could reread it a couple times and get something new from it each time. Like the parallels between the main character and Jesus? Brilliant.

Mine is definitely 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress'. He's always been one of my favorite authors.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (currently, haven't read Stranger yet), although The Man Who Sold the Moon certainly ranks up there.

He is my favourite author; so the following are my picks for different reasons:
The Door Into Summer - The first of his works I read. Good time travel paradox stuff, and a good pun about 'leaving the cat in the bag'. The Past Through Tomorrow: Future History - The collection of his best short works. Glory Road - Good hero plot. The Number of the Beast - A good plot that includes his histories and those of others. Others too numerous to mention; but I feel his best works were short stories and novellas. I didn't like Stranger in a Strange Land. Too much politics and social commentary. It wasn't SF enough. Works I have yet to read: Time Enough For Love Starship Troopers _________________ Kindersley or Bust! ("`-/")_.-'"``-.,, \. . `; -._( );, `) (v_,)' _ )`-. \ ``'` _.- _..-/ /((.' ((,.-' ((,/ |

and a whole generation of us because SF fans and writers because of Heinlein's "juveniles" ... BETWEEN PLANETS, ROCKETSHIP GALILEO (would have been a super X-Prize contender), THE ROLLING STONES, SPACE CADET, FARMER IN THE SKY, TUNNEL IN THE SKY, THE STAR BEAST, CITIZEN OF THE GALAXY, STARMAN JONES, etc. Great stuff! I devoured them as fast as our local library could get 'em!

Citizen of the Galaxy for sure. Probably the first SF book I ever read and still the best.
