Funny as this may sound...I think a full developed solar/rocket powered carrier could achieve what Orion could have done..enable the Saturn trip; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCszu4zaqr0

Ah... the paths not taken. That's an oldie by a goodie.

I don't think your little airplane can get ten thousand tons to Mars or Saturn. Apple and orange orchard comparison.

JamesG..no it cannot..it would have to be 300 meters spanning craft...but it could carry very rapidly the pieces of a bigger ship to orbit...the OBERON that I mentioned before. There a team of trained builder/astronauts could assemble it ready for the crew.

Is there an ANSARI X-prize for these smaller carriers ?

Here is the same ship with 32 m spanning wings...and rocket power added to reach the orbit.

This could have a pod ( after releasing the orbiter )..to house 2 people with life support..sorta like emergency ambulance for LEO missions !?

A mixed ION drive chemical rocket hybrid....? To be constructed on the orbit.

Remember that your thrust line (direction you want to accelerate in) is not often aligned with the best position for your solar panels. Your solar arrays and your propulsion system needs to be able to track independently of each other.

Can't you rotate the ship that the panels are to the sun..albeit ship is moving into certain direction..in space the air doesn't exist ..so it should matter where the thrusters point when it moves...unpowered....oh I get it...the ion thrusters...what if the panels rotated and turned in between the catamaran hulls...like a sail...sorta ?

Ion thrusters or when you need to make trajectory correction burns. You don't want to waste power & propellant moving the vehicle around any more than you absolutely have to.

Having the "sail" hinged would add a lot more mass.

I wonder if it was constructed on the orbit..when gravity is not there...could it be made light weight ?

JamesG...the solution !

Also uses the ion thrusters for braking once back to earth gravitation ( jettisons the c-thrusters ! ).

Much lighter than the previous sketch.

I'm not sure what I'm looking at. You should do your models in Sketchup or something instead of that black background line drawing.

23 degs tilted object is the solar panel.

Could this also utilize what we know as "SOLAR WIND" ?

This is a Catamaran...after all.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_sail

Somehow I feel 26 m x 26 m is too small ..to be also a solar sail.
