esearchers from the University of Sheffield and Buckingham University claim to have found evidence for microscopic organisms living 16 miles up in the atmosphere between Chester and Wakefield.

The scientists used a specially designed balloon to gather samples in the stratosphere during the recent Perseid meteor shower.

They found the fragments of single celled algae known as a diatom.

I hope your tax dollars didn't pay for that "research".

They should at least do a mission when there's no meteorite shower, as a background to measure against. Seawater is chock full of diatoms, so to me the hypothesis that hurricanes lift them up into the atmosphere seems a lot more likely than that they're raining down from space. Which is not to say that it's impossible, and if they want to do more research I'd say let them, but it's definitely way too early to be drawing conclusions.

The probability of recognizable diatoms being able to live in space in order for their skeletons to rain down on Earth is infinitely smaller than them having been blown into the high atmosphere.
