Hello everybody,

just thought it would be nice to talk about our favourite satellites/deep space probes, etc.
You can nominate any spacecraft you want for any reason you can think of: looks, difficulty of mission, endurance (voyager), success against all odds (hayabusa), ... as long as it meets the following requirements:
a) it really exists, so no sci-fi stuff here! Exception: stuff that is not yet in space, but already during construction, like the JWST and such.
b) it is unmanned, so no, the Space Shuttle and the ISS don't count!
c) the X-37 is disqualified from entering because it's an unmanned miniature shuttle, that's cheating! :P

There won't be a poll, because there are just way to much crafts out there to name them all.

So I'll start the discussion and nominate ESA's GOCE mission.

Why? Because measuring gravity fields is cool stuff and very interesting and of course with its aerodynamic shape, wings and dual ION engines it just has to be the best looking satellite ever made in my opinion! 8)

I have a soft spot for underdogs and overachievers.

I nominate:

Hubble
Spirit and Opportunity

I'll go back a bit farther, and go with Vanguard 2 and Explorer 7, respectively for being the first satellite to make Earth observations, and the first satellite to yield significant new insights into our planet's climate.

The Ofeq series of reconnaissance satellites. Besides the fact that they are Israel's satellites, they have to be launched on a retrograde orbit, because Israel is the size a postage stamp, and the only place that the stages can be dropped is the Mediterranean Ocean, which is to the west of Israel. The satellites, therefore, have to be made lightweight. With a population of 7 million, launching satellites is an achievement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ofeq

I like Ginga; perhaps because it was launched in my birth year, about a month before I was born and only re-entered Earth's atmosphere in late 1991, already when I have liked Astronomy. :)
Otherwise, I like simply all of the satellites which I see orbit Earth's atmosphere, they are like celestial objects to me; moving stars. Nothing better than seeing a satelltie or two in the heavy black sky adorned with millions of stars of varying magnitudes.
