I was browsing the web and noticed that some people had created models of SpaceShipOne for X-Plane, the highly realistic flight simulator which calculates flight parameters based on the aircraft's shape. Here are the links:

Yeah, actually I've flown the SS1 that comes with X-Plane. It's pretty cool, I've done a few glide flights and back in December made a couple of actual X Prize runs! I managed to hit 64 miles during the highest flight and wound up nearly 20 downrange.
The surprising thing about SpaceShipOne, asuming the game modeling is correct, is how easy it is to land it. Just nose over to stay at least 200+ mph, and the thing lands just like one of the gliders I can actually fly in the real world. That's really increadible when you consider how low its aspect ratio is (Aspect ratio is the width of the wing divided by length, a fighter is about 6, a Cessna 10, a sailplane up to 30, and SS1 about 1). Anyone who would like to fly in SS1, doesn't have $100,000 to burn, but has a computer up to par should download the X-Plane demo and try the plane out. You can only fly for five minutes, but it's better than nothing. _________________ "Yes, that series of words I just said made perfect sense!" -Professor Hubert Farnsworth |
