Post Reason for X Prize name?
Why is it called the X Prize? Is that for eXploration? Or Crossing (X) into space?

X-prize is named after the X series of aerospace programs run by the Air Force (and later NASA) starting in the 40's. X for eXperimental.

You've heard of Chuck Yeager and the X-1, yes?

Hmmmm how have you heard of Yeager but not of X-1??? Hehe anways, the Bell X-1 was the experimental aircraft that he flew to break the sound barrier on October 14th, 1947 at an altitude of 43,000 feet. His max speed was 700mph or mach 1.06... The information was not disclosed to the public until June of the following year though... Anyway, that's you history lesson for the day :P

Thanks for the lesson rockchick. I've heard of Yeager, because, I don't know, I clicked through the movie The Right Stuff one time right when his character was at home being depressed. Meantime I did some "research" and read quite about him and his hypsersonic exploits.

I highly recommend reading Chuck Yeager's autobiography titled "Yeager".

It came out in 1986 but much of the book is still very relevant today.

Reading it will give you a really good insight into the X-1 program and the beginning of the space age.

Yeager is THE original, prototypical Jet Jockey.

Most public libraries should have a copy. I bought mine in paperback for $1 at a used bookstore.
